Hawking papers to help children. Charity Newsies volunteers sold a special edition of The Dispatch across the Franklin County area yesterday to raise money to help clothe needy schoolchildren. The 104-year-old charity raised $473,952.56 in the street-corner sale. An auction and gala on Thursday raised an additional $407,503. The annual Newsies sale was inspired more than a century ago when three gentlemen inside a Downtown restaurant watched a child shivering in the cold trying to hawk his papers.

2011 Gala and Live Auction

Representatives from the Nationwide Foundation and the Charity Newsies gathered December 8th for the annual Charity Newsies Gala, which included a live auction and other events. The foundation paid $75,000 for the year’s first Charity Newsies paper at the Aladdin Shrine Complex. The 104-year-old charity raised a total of $407,503 last night. The Newsies’ special edition of The Dispatch will be sold on street corners on Saturday. All proceeds go to help clothe needy schoolchildren in Franklin County.
